Plastic drinking cups from Port of Antwerp Night Marathon to be transformed into unique table and chairs for Q8 service station
Organiser Golazo and main partner Q8 give plastic waste a second life
The tens of thousands of plastic cups used by runners during the Port of Antwerp Night Marathon are due to get a second life: they will be collected and recycled using 3D-printing and made into a hip table and chairs for a Q8 service station. This innovative plastic waste re-use project is the brainchild of organiser Golazo and partner Q8.
Runners at the Port of Antwerp Night Marathon on Saturday 11 September will be provided with water and sports drinks in plastic drink cups at supply stations every 2.5 kilometres. Run organiser Golazo, along with its main partner Q8, will be asking runners to dispose of their cups in the Q8 recycling bins that line the course. Actress and presenter Saartje Vandendriessche, herself an avid runner, features in a video encouraging her fellow runners to do the same. “Those who help with recycling get the chance to win a fun Q8 Dopper bottle at the finish”, explains Golazo’s Greg Broekmans. “This way we can separate cups from other waste and give them a second life. Once collected, the cups will be compressed into big bales, chopped into small pieces and melted down into plastic pellets. We will then turn them into an exclusive table and chairs using a 3D-printer.”
Hip service station furniture
These unique items of furniture will take pride of place at a Q8 service station. “As the main sponsor, we consider it important to focus on sustainability. We want to support this by facilitating the collection and recycling of cups and giving them a second life at a Q8 service station”, says spokesperson Katia Van Bouwel of Q8.
